John 1:12

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe on His name.”

John 1:12 is one of the most breathtaking promises in all of Scripture. It reminds us that becoming a child of God is not something we earn, inherit, or achieve—it is a gift received by faith. When we open our hearts to Jesus, when we welcome Him and trust in His name, God does something miraculous: He adopts us into His family. We move from simply being His creation to becoming His beloved sons and daughters.

This verse also carries a beautiful assurance. In the ancient world, adoption granted full legal standing and permanent belonging. Once adopted, a child could not be cast aside. Many pastors highlight this historical truth to show the security of our salvation—once God makes you His child, He does not unmake you.

John tells us that receiving Christ is an intentional act—embracing Him, trusting Him, resting our lives upon Him. And believing in His name is not a one‑time moment but a daily posture of faith. As we walk with Jesus, we grow into the identity He has given us: children of God, loved beyond measure, welcomed without condition, held with everlasting arms.

So today, let this truth settle deeply in your spirit: You are God’s child because you have received His Son. You belong. You are loved. You are His.
